20 Jahre Modellbetrieb für Ökolandbau in Müncheberg. Teil 1: Entwicklung von Humus- und Nährstoffgehalten Organic Eprints
Bachinger, Johann; Bloch, Ralf; Reckling, Moritz; Stein-Bachinger, Karin.

A comparative study of nitrate leaching from intensively managed monoculture grass and grass-clover pastures Organic Eprints
P.S., Hooda; M., Moynagh; I.F., Svoboda; H.A., Anderson.
Nitrate leaching losses from intensively managed monoculture grass and grass-clover pastures were measured during 1994-96 at a long-term experimental farm in south-west Scotland. Field-size lysimeter plots were established in 1993 on the existing pastures on a silty clay loam non-calcareous gley. No fertilizer-N was applied to the grass-clover, while the monoculture grass was fertilized with c.240 kg N ha-1 year-1, but both swards received 2-3 cattle slurry applications annually (120-390 kg total N ha-1 year-1). The pastures supported 2-3 cuts for silage conservation, and were grazed by dairy cattle and stocked with sheep during the winter months. Initially, leachate nitrate concentrations from the fertilized grass were considerably larger than those...

A comparison of soil quality and yield parameters under organic and conventional vineyard systems in Mediterranean conditions (West Turkey) Organic Eprints
OKUR, Nur; KAYIKÇIOĞLU, Hüsnü; ATEŞ, Fadime; YAĞMUR, Bülent.
Soil chemical and microbial parameters are commonly used as soil quality indicators to evaluate sustainable land management in agroecosystems. The objective of this research was to evaluate the impact of organic and conventional management strategies on biological,chemicalandyieldparametersinvineyards(Vitisviniferacv.Sultaniseedless). Organic plots received a mixture of barley, vetch and broad bean (25þ35 þ75kg seed ha21) as green manure, and farmyard manure (15t ha21) every year. Inorganic fertilizers (NPK)andpesticideswereusedintheconventionalmanagedvineyards.Conventionaland mulch tillage methods were used in conventional and organic plots, respectively. Microbiological and chemical soil properties were determined in the soil samples which...

A discussion of norms for S supply in organic farming based on content in forage and ruminant performance in Norway Organic Eprints
Hansen, Sissel; Bakken, Anne Kjersti.
The content of sulphur (S) in grassland on 27 Norwegian organic farms with dairy or sheep production was investigated in 2001 and 2002. The forage content of S was below the norms (2 g S kg DM-1) for both plants and animals in a large proportion of the samples. The average S content in forage at dairy farms was 1.4 g S kg DM-1 and at sheep farms 1.5 g. Even on grasslands with low plant S content (<1 g S kg DM-1), S-fertilization did not increase yields and increased the plants’ S content only very slightly. No indications of S deficiency were observed on the dairy farms. For one sheep farm with a forage S content of 1.1 ± 0.1g S kg DM-1, brittle and short winter wool was reported.

A flexible tool for simulation of soil carbon turnover Organic Eprints
Petersen, B.M.; Olesen, J.E.; Heidmann, T..
Existing models of soil organic matter (SOM) turnover are implemented within rigid and often complex modelling environments, which makes the testing of influence of SOM model structure a rather difficult task. A new soil carbon turnover simulation tool is presented (C-TOOL v. 1.0). It facilitates the construction of a wide range of user-definable SOM models based on linked SOM pools and a decay described for each pool by first order kinetics. Simulation of carbon isotopes 13C and 14C is facilitated. No programming is necessary for defining or redefining models, as the model structure is given in set-up files. The program is fast, and can utilise a range of time-steps, which enhances the computation of steady level SOM contents. The ability of C-TOOL to...

A Guide to Nutrient Budgeting on Organic Farms Organic Eprints
Watson, Christine; Topp, Cairistiona F E; Stockdale, Elizabeth.
The leaflet gives practical guidance on using data and calculating farm-gate nutrient budgets with sections on soil analysis, nutrient inputs, nutrient losses and flows, nitrogen fixation through leys and how inputs and outputs from organic manures and livestock feed can be recorded. It contains one example table of a farm-gate annual nutrient budget for a mixed cattle and arable farm. The tool is specific to organic farming. It was drafted for the UK but has relevance in other countries.

A model analysis on nitrate leaching under different soil and climate conditions and use of catch crops Organic Eprints
Pedersen, Anders; Stoumann Jensen, Lars; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
The use of crops and catch crops with deep rooting can strongly improve the possibility of retaining nitrate-N that will otherwise be leached to the deeper soil layers and end up in the surrounding environment. But will it always be an advantage for the farmer to grow a catch crop? This will depend on factors such as soil mineral nitrogen level, soil water holding capacity, winter precipitation, rooting depth and N demand of the scceeding crop. These factors interact, and it can be very difficult for farmers or advisors to use this information to decide whether growing a catch crop will be beneficial. To analyse the effect of catch crops under different Danish soil and precipitation conditions, we used the soil, plant and atmosphere model Daisy.

A rainfall simulation study on the relationships between soil test P versus dissolved and potentially bioavailable particulate phosphorus forms in runoff Organic Eprints
Uusitalo, Risto; Aura, Erkki.
Runoff from clayey soils often contains abundant particulate phoshorus (PP), part of which may solubilize in surface waters. Monitoring losses of potentially bioavailable forms of PP is expensive, calling for other ways to predict them. Such predictions could be based on soil loss and available soil P indices, e.g., agronomic P status. To study correlations between P pools in runoff versus soil P saturation (by Mehlich 3 extraction; DPSM3) and acetate soil test P (PAc), 15 clayey soils of south Finland were subjected to laboratory rainfall simulation. Runoff from these simulations was analyzed for concentrations of suspended soil (TSS), dissolved molybdate-reactive P (DRP), total P (TP), and, as normalized to soil loss, potentially bioavailable forms of...

A review of farm-scale nutrient budgets for organic farms as a tool for management of soil fertility Organic Eprints
Watson, C.A.; Bengtsson, H.; Ebbesvik, M.; Loes, A-K.; Myrbeck, A.; Salomon, E.; Schroder, J.; Stockdale, E.A..
On organic farms, where the importation of materials to build/maintain soil fertility is restricted, it is important that a balance between inputs and outputs of nutrients is achieved to ensure both short-term productivity and long-term sustainability. This paper considers different approaches to nutrient budgeting on organic farms and evaluates the sources of bias in the measurements and/or estimates of the nutrient inputs and outputs. The paper collates 88 nutrient budgets compiled at the farm scale in 9 temperate countries. All the nitrogen (N) budgets showed an N surplus (average 83.2 kg N ha-1 year-1). The efficiency of N use, defined as outputs/inputs, was highest (0.9) and lowest (0.2) in arable and beef systems respectively. The phosphorus (P) and...

A row cropping system with cover crops for balancing weed and soil fertility management in organic cereal production Organic Eprints
Phan, Hong TT; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
This manuscript shows the result from testing the new row cropping system for its ability to produce a balanced combination of inter-row hoeing and undersown cover crop in order to obtain a sufficient N supply and an effective weed control as well as to identify optimal sowing time for high biomass production and cover crop species suited for late undersowing. The new system produced a sufficient N supply and an acceptable weed control effect, leading to an improvement in the subsequent crop yield. Yield in this system is potentially improved further because some managements are suggested to increase its weed control effect, especially for the perennial creeping thistle cirsium arvense.

Abschätzung des Risikos einer Schwermetall-Akkumulation in Böden durch längerfristige Anwendung von Recycling- Phosphor-Düngemitteln Organic Eprints
Weissengruber, Lina; Friedel, Jürgen K.; Möller, Kurt.
In order to assess the risk of the use of recycled phosphorus (P) fertilisers for organic farming, the potential accumulation of heavy metals in soil after a 200-year fertilizer application equivalent to 11 kg P ha-1 yr-1 was calculated in a mass balance approach. Both fertilizers currently allowed in organic farming and recycled P fertilizers were regarded. For heavy metals, four scenarios with two soil pH levels (pH 5 and pH 7) and two precipitation excess levels (F 0.1 and F 0.3 m yr-1) were calculated. Recycled P fertilizers like struvite, meat- and bone meal, ashes, sewage sludge and digestate, as well as phosphate rock and triple superphosphate had a higher P content and a lower heavy metal-to-P ratio than composts. Consequently, compost application...

Accumulation and translocation of sparingly soluble manure phosphorus in different types of soils after long-term excessive inputs Organic Eprints
Uustitalo, Risto; Ylivainio, Kari; Turtola, Eila; Kangas, Arjo.
When phosphorus (P) is applied to soils in excess of plant P demand, P accumulation takes place. By means of P fractionation, we studied the fate of P in 35 soils that had received long-term surplus P rates as fox and mink manure P (F&MM-P), considered as a sparingly soluble P source. We compared these data with those from the same soils under a more typical P management, i.e., fields amended with soluble P sources superphosphate and dairy manure (SP+DM). Fractionation of manures according to the Hedley procedure suggested limited solubility of F&MM-P, two-thirds of the F&MM-P being soluble in acid (HCl) only. In mineral soils, surplus F&MM-P accumulated for the most part as HCl-P (poorly available), whereas in organic soils accumulation...

Ackerbausysteme im ökologischen Landbau: Untersuchungen zur Nmin-, N2O-N- und NH2-N-Dynamik sowie Rückschlüsse zur Anbau-Optimierung Organic Eprints
Beckmann, Uta; Kolbe, Hartmut; Model, Annett; Russow, Rolf.
